I live in Alice Springs, in the centre of Australia. A year ago today a young Aboriginal man was killed when he was set upon by five local youths who had been driving up and down the riverbed frightening campers, for no reason other than because they were drunk and wanted some excitement/fun. The dead man witnessed them drive extremely close to a camp of people, in which one elderly man was unable to escape the approaching car quickly and came close to being hit. When the car came near the dead man, he reacted by throwing a bottle at the car. For this he was set upon, and ended up dead. This happened a short walk around the corner from my home.
The Four Corners feature last week highlights just what sort of town this can be when events such as this open us up to scrutiny from within, and from outside.
